Member of Parliament for Odododiodio, Hon. Alfred Nii Kotey Ashie, has expressed deep concern over the prolonged delay in completing the Salaga Market redevelopment project in his constituency.

The project, initiated to provide better trading facilities, has been stalled for years, forcing traders to sell on the streets.

Hon. Ashie highlighted the project’s history, noting it began under the NDC government in 2016 but halted when the NPP government took over.

He criticised the previous administration for diverting the project’s focus towards developing stalls for the affluent rather than prioritizing the needs of local traders.

The MP stated he’s now working tirelessly to complete the project, using multiple channels to push for its development. He has questioned the Minister for Local Government on the project’s progress and met with the Mayor of Accra to discuss solutions.

Additionally, he’s using his Coastal Accra Rebranding Project to attract investors and support the market’s redevelopment.

Hon. Ashie’s ultimate goal is to move market traders off the streets and into proper sheds, improving their business conditions and overall quality of life. He emphasized the need for a multi-pronged approach to address the market’s challenges, including fire safety concerns.

The MP’s efforts have yielded some positive responses, with the Minister for Local Government assuring him of measures to prevent fire outbreaks in markets. Hon. Ashie is optimistic these assurances will translate into tangible actions, including the provision of fire hydrants, fire tenders, and modern firefighting mechanisms.

The MP also stressed the importance of educating market traders on fire prevention and safety. He plans to engage market leaders in training programs to empower them with the knowledge and skills to prevent fires and respond effectively in emergencies.
