The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) has released a statement addressing the recent suspension of the Chief Justice and its implications for Ghana’s democracy and rule of law.
The statement, signed by Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, Bishop of Sunyani and President of the GCBC, emphasized the need to uphold justice, peace, and the integrity of democratic governance.
Regarding the suspension of the Chief Justice, the GCBC deemed it a matter of profound national significance, stressing the need for strict adherence to constitutional principles and absolute procedural fairness, particularly concerning the separation of powers.
The Bishops’ Conference cautioned against actions that could irreparably erode public trust in the institutions citizens rely upon for justice.
It appealed to all stakeholders to act with utmost conscientiousness to safeguard the inviolable rule of law and the dignity of the judiciary.
The statement urged political parties and their supporters to exercise maximum restraint and prioritise national peace above partisan advantage.
The statement concluded with a prayer for Ghana, urging citizens to renew their commitment to building a just, peaceful, and prosperous Ghana – a nation where every citizen finds refuge in the law and hope in their common future.
