Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has assured Ghanaians that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) is not running away from the Bawku crisis, as claimed by their political opponents.
Delivering the final address on the debate on the mid-year budget review statement on Thursday July 31, 2025, he blamed the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for creating the Bawku crisis.
He claimed that under the NDC from the 1980s, Bawku was peaceful. However, after former President Kufuor took over, the Bawku crisis started.
He was emphatic that the NDC government will address the crisis once and for all.
He expressed confidence in the mediation efforts by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
‘’We, the NDC government, are not running away from Bawku. Mr. Speaker, for those of you who have chosen to have a short memory, Bawku was a very peaceful place from 1984 till 2001 when Kufuor took over as President. That is it. Those are the facts. Mr. Speaker—you don’t know about Bawku, let me tell you about Bawku, and you can go and check the records. If you want us to debate it, I can fix a date, and we will debate it, and I will give you the records.
Mr. Speaker, the problem in Bawku was caused under the NPP administration. Whilst Akufo-Addo was president, he allowed somebody to be appointed as a rival chief of Bawku, and that is the cause of the problem. And whilst Akufo-Addo was president, that rival chief was taken into Bawku. That is the cause of the problem of Bawku, and I am assuring that President John Dramani Mahama will solve the Bawku problem once and for all.’’
Mahama Ayariga added, ‘’We are not rushing. We don’t want to be populist. We have confidence in the Asantehene, and we leave the matter in his hands, and I can assure you that Bawku would be solved.’’
