The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) is losing a staggering 73 million gallons of treated water every day in the Greater Accra region.
According to Managing Director Adam Mutawakilu, this massive loss is due to theft, illegal connections, and aging infrastructure.
Mutawakilu revealed the shocking figures. “In Greater Accra, we produce about 140 million gallons a day, but we can only account for 67 million gallons,” he said. “That means we cannot account for 73 million gallons every single day.”
He also noted that even the water they do track isn’t always paid for.
“Even with the 67 million gallons that are accounted for, we are still unable to collect all the revenue,” he said in an interview on Citi TV.
Across the entire country, the situation is dire. Mutawakilu stated that the company can only account for 48% of the water it produces, meaning more than half of its supply is either lost or unbilled.
