Peace Watch Ghana: Helicopter crash was preventable; allow regional appointees to represent the President

August 17, 2025
Nyonkopa Daniels

Peace Watch Ghana, a registered non-profit organization advocating for peace and security, has stated that the August 6 helicopter crash was a preventable disaster.

Madam Nyonkopa Daniels, the organization’s Executive Director, argued that the presence of the Lands and Natural Resources Minister and the Regional Minister was sufficient to represent the President at the event.

She noted that authorities should minimise the number of appointees attending state events to cut costs and ensure the safety of officials.
Daniels stressed that there was no need for the Defence Minister and other personnel to have traveled to the location, as the two ministers already in attendance could have adequately represented the President.

She proposed that, as part of their reforms, authorities should adopt an approach where the District Chief Executive, Regional Minister, or sector Minister represents the President at functions specific to their respective areas.

“These were men and women appointed to serve us, and they died tragically. I strongly believe these individuals would have survived if they had not attended the event,” she said.
Daniels added that the tragic incident should serve as a lesson, not only for state events but also for political campaigns, where large entourages often follow a single candidate.

“It does not make sense that everybody wants to follow the President everywhere,” she stated, emphasizing that allowing appointees in their respective areas to attend events would prevent disasters and preserve the lives of officials.

She urged the Chief of Staff to address this issue, noting that a more streamlined approach to official travel would help prevent future tragedies.
