Akwatia by-election is not a war zone for us to spend resources in deploying 5000 officers; let’s calm down – Peace Watch Ghana

Peace Watch Ghana (PWG), a registered non-profit, non-governmental organization (NGO), has expressed concern over the tension surrounding the September 2, 2025 Akwatia By-election.

The Executive Director of the NGO, Madam Nyonkopa Daniels, stated that the Police’s announcement to deploy 5,000 officers to the constituency has exposed the high level of tension surrounding the upcoming election.
Appearing on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, she remarked that the use of 5,000 police officers was troubling since the area is not a war zone.

She, however, admitted that the police are trying to stay alert and prevent a repetition of what occurred during the rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency.

She stated that what happened during the rerun was terrible, especially the assault on people, including Mavis Hawa Koomson.

Madam Nyonkopa Daniels advised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to call their supporters to order and caution them against any attempt to engage in lawlessness or violent activities.

“The Akwatia By-election is almost here, and as a peace advocate and an organization, we want to call on constituents in the area and also the NDC and NPP to call their parties to order so that we will not allow violence and lawlessness to characterize the election. The Police have announced that they will deploy 5,000 officers to the constituency. Are we going to war? It is expensive to send 5,000 officers to the constituency because of a By-election. How many police officers would we have deployed if it were to be the general elections?

We don’t have to allow lawlessness and violence to mar our elections. What happened in Ablekuma North during the rerun has also necessitated this, and it is not the best. As a people, we should not allow politics and elections to divide us. Engaging in lawlessness will deprive us of development, and so we have to put a stop to it,” she added.

He advised the youth not to allow political parties to exploit them for violent activities, as this could lead to trouble.

”Be wise and do not permit any politician to influence you to engage in lawlessness or violence. No politician will assume responsibility for your well-being if you get injured. Therefore, remain alert, stay vigilant, and avoid lawlessness.”
