Police at the Akyem Oda District Command in the Eastern Region have arrested a 30-year-old man, Samuel Gyasi, for allegedly stealing GH¢3,000 from a customer’s Mobile Money account.
The incident took place at Akyem Essam, a community within the Birim Central Municipality.
The victim, Mr Samuel Kwakye, popularly known in the area as Yaw Kwakye, recounted that the suspect presented himself as an official Telecel Ghana agent offering assistance to residents.
Relying on the suspect’s claim, Mr Kwakye handed over his mobile phone to Gyasi to help him purchase airtime.
However, shortly after the transaction, the victim discovered that an amount of GH¢3,000 had been transferred directly from his phone to the suspect’s personal Mobile Money wallet.
Upon his arrest, Gyasi admitted to committing the act in his caution statement to the police.
He explained that he was heavily indebted to the MTN Quick Loan service and panicked when he noticed a substantial balance on the victim’s phone.
According to Gyasi, he transferred the funds with the intention of clearing his outstanding debt and planned to refund the victim at a later date.
The Akyem Oda District Police have since launched full investigations into the matter, after which the suspect is expected to be processed for court.
