The Unpaid Nurses and Midwives Association has accepted the government’s assurances and established modalities for the payment of all outstanding salary arrears, according to Kwadwo Cakyiaa, Convenor for the association.
Mr. Cakyiaa expressed gratitude, noting that the Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, addressed the association’s concerns regarding the non-payment of these long-standing arrears.
He explained that the members are now set to receive their regular monthly salaries on time, effective November. Crucially, plans and clearance have also been secured to disburse all existing arrears.
The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, publicly announced the government’s commitment on Monday, October 13, 2025, stating that all outstanding salary arrears owed to nurses and midwives would be cleared by November. The Minister further disclosed that the Ministry of Finance has received Cabinet approval to release the necessary funds for these payments.
According to Mr. Akandoh, the total number of affected health workers stands at 13,500. Of this figure, approximately 7,000 nurses are currently receiving payments, 3,000 are on the payroll but awaiting payment, and an additional 3,500 are undergoing processing.
In a statement, Kwadwo Cakyiaa confirmed the association’s position: “We extend our gratitude to the government, particularly the Health Minister, for taking concrete steps in addressing our concerns. Our members are pleased with the outcome. Based on the assurances provided, our monthly salary will be paid on time starting November, while the arrears dating from December until now will also be settled. The arrears will be disbursed in installments rather than as a single lump sum.”
