Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Amasaman, Akwasi Owusu Afrifa-Mensa, has vehemently dismissed as both “ridiculous and an insult” the accusation that he supported the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) current MP, Sedem Kweku Afenyo, against the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidate, Yahya Kasim Atta.
Contrary to allegations of working against the NPP candidate, Mr. Afrifa-Mensa asserted that he provided full support and actively mobilized the party within the constituency for victory, expressing regret over the eventual loss.
He was responding to claims made by some listeners during an interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM.
He informed host Kwabena Agyapong that those circulating these claims are dishonest and are only leveling these accusations to unjustly damage his reputation.
Furthermore, he ruled out any suggestion of sabotage during the NPP primaries, which he lost, stating, “If God had intended for me to continue as MP, I would have won, and I am grateful to God for all that transpired. People are acknowledging my legacy, and I appreciate that.”
Addressing the core accusation, he stated: “Now, to those accusing me of working against the NPP candidate and supporting the NDC, it is simply ridiculous. They contribute to making politics in Ghana appear so dirty to the point where individuals will fabricate lies against you. Despite the challenges I faced, I organized house-to-house campaigns for our party and the parliamentary candidate. I appeared on platforms. I personally organized a unity walk, bore the cost, held the candidate’s hand, and campaigned for him. Would I, in my right mind, do these things if I were working against him as is being alleged? It is unfortunate that some people are making these baseless accusations against me.”
He concluded with a powerful appeal against defamation: “If I had been incapacitated, I would have faced a tragic fate. Therefore, please let us refrain from peddling falsehoods against people. You must not make false allegations against individuals simply because you assume they will not respond. To the best of my knowledge, and genuinely in my heart, I did not work against the NPP, the party I hold in such high regard.”
