The Member of Parliament for Kwesimintsim Constituency, Lawyer Philip Fiifi Buckman, has come out strongly against the Minority’s petition to the Speaker of Parliament seeking to halt the vetting of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Chief Justice.
According to Lawyer Buckman, the minority’s actions are nothing but “political gymnastics” aimed at frustrating the appointment of a substantive Chief Justice.
He believes that Ghana needs a Chief Justice who can provide leadership and direction to the judiciary, and Justice Baffoe-Bonnie is the right person for the job.
The minority’s petition is based on ongoing court cases related to the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
However, Lawyer Buckman argues that these cases should not hold up the appointment process, as they are likely to drag on for a long time.
He also points out that the President has followed the constitutional process in nominating Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, and Parliament should respect the constitution by proceeding with the vetting and approval process.
The vetting of Justice Baffoe-Bonnie is scheduled to take place on November 10, 2025. If the minority’s petition is successful, it could delay the appointment process and leave the judiciary without a substantive leader.
The MP believes that the minority are engaging in political gamesmanship and that their petition is baseless.
The minority argues that the ongoing court cases related to Justice Torkornoo’s removal need to be resolved before proceeding with the appointment of a new Chief Justice.
The outcome of this debate will have significant implications for the judiciary and the country as a whole.
The Speaker of Parliament will likely consider the minority’s petition and decide whether to proceed with the vetting of Justice Baffoe-Bonnie. The outcome will be closely watched by stakeholders and could have far-reaching consequences for the judiciary.
