The Christian Council of Ghana has held a thanksgiving service and an award ceremony for its maiden Ecumenical Convention.
The ceremony was held on Sunday, November 17, 2025, at the University of Ghana Central Cafeteria under the theme “Uniting the Body of Christ for Greater Impact.” In his closing address, General Secretary for CCG, Rev. Dr. Cyril Fayose, stated that the Ecumenical Convention was historic and successful.
He said one of the initiatives of the CCG is to replicate ecumenism at both the local and national levels.
He explained that the Council realized there was a gap between the National Council of Churches and the local council of churches, and after brainstorming, it was decided that the CCG organize the Ecumenical Convention. The convention itself served as a strategic platform to strengthen relationships among Christian denominations in Ghana and the diaspora, aiming to pursue a collective impact on national issues.
The key feature of the convention was to also thank God and award those who have distinguished themselves through their service to the church.
Delivering the sermon for the day, former Presiding Bishop of Methodist Church Ghana, Most Rev. Paul Kwabena Boafo, highlighted that the Christian community has played a major role in maintaining Ghana’s current peace, stability, and safety.
To sustain this crucial role, he emphasized the necessity of continued unity over fragmentation.
He added that the convention’s theme was highly appropriate, stating that while the various churches are diverse in their way of life, they all stand under the essential banner of Christ.
As a majority Christian nation, he reminded the attendees that if they pursue a single purpose and agenda—that of disciplining the entire nation—they must remember that in unity, they can transform lives, uplift the nation, and maintain peace and stability in Ghana and beyond.
He commended the CCG for championing the gospel of Christ, development, bringing life and meaning to the gospel to Ghanaians and beyond.
He called for unity within the body of Christ, lamenting that there was fragmentation within the Christian community. Most Rev. Kwabena Boafo said the Church must stay united in order to have one voice speaking against corruption, environmental degradation, injustice, and division.
He said the Church stands as a beacon of peace, democracy, peace, and stability, serving as a pillar of social service delivery, national cohesion, and national identity.
“If Ghana has remained peaceful, and Ghana has remained a beacon of peace and democracy, Christianity has played a very big and vital role in this exercise.”
The convention brought together members of the five pioneering churches — Methodist Church Ghana, the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, the Anglican Church, the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, and the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Zion Church, alongside participants from other denominations, with the aim of fostering unity within the Christian community.
The Special Guest of Honour, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, the Presidential Envoy in charge of interfaith and ecumenical bodies, commended the Church for its contribution towards education, healthcare, and spiritual guidance, social protection, and social justice.
He said the church has contributed to promoting development and serves as the most reliable partner of the government for human development.
He said in a world characterized by division, the church plays a key role in ensuring unity. Mr. Ankrah called on the Christian community to actively support President John Dramani Mahama’s vision for “resetting the country.” He outlined the President’s vision: “The President envisions a Ghana where children are better educated, our health system is stronger and more equitable, our government institutions are accountable, and national unity is strengthened.”
Mr. Ankrah affirmed the President’s commitment to maintaining “a stronger economy, inclusive governance, and shared prosperity in a country where everyone will thrive irrespective of political, religious, and ethnic background.”
To achieve these goals, he clarified that the government requires not only the “prayers of the Christian Council but its deeper collaboration.”
This collaboration includes the church holding the government accountable, support for civic education, where the church helps “foster a culture of responsible citizenship, productivity, and patriotism among congregations,” and active participation in community development.
Elvis Afriyie Ankrah reaffirmed that the government, through his office, will continue to work closely with the CCG and all other faith-based organizations to develop Ghana, stating that the government needs the “moral voice, guidance, advocacy, partnership, and support of the Christian Council.”
Mr. Ankrah expressed concern about negative trends in the church, including false prophecies, extortion and false doctrines.
He emphasised the need for internal reform, greater accountability and discipline within the church in Ghana, citing excesses in ministry, financial indiscipline and spiritual manipulations.
Mr. Ankrah stressed that the church must ensure discipline and uphold biblical accountability, ethical stewardship and Christ-like governance to protect its integrity.
The Council honored 14 Local Council of Churches (LCCs) for their dedicated service and commitment to the Council’s activities in their respective local communities.
Individual awards were also presented to 14 persons for their years of dedicated service to the Christian Council at both local and national levels.
