The Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has expressed the view that the ongoing debate within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding the party’s presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections is an unnecessary diversion.
He emphasised that both government appointees and party members should prioritize delivering on governance objectives rather than engaging in premature succession discussions.
The Minister said this during an interview on Bolgatanga-based A1 Radio.
He indicated that the President has completed only one year in office and should be allowed to focus on his mandate, devoid of what he termed as unnecessary political speculation.
In his view, the discussion about the party’s next leader should be held when the NDC is prepared to elect its next candidate.
“I am more interested in working to be a good Attorney General and serving the people of this country. I am not very keen on who succeeds the President. In fact, it is not something I think about regularly because I believe it is a distraction. The President has done just one year. We should allow him to continue working. At the appropriate time after we have conducted our party elections and selected our branch, constituency, regional, and national executives then those who wish to contest can come forward,” he explained.
“We should be more interested in the welfare-enhancing programmes of the government than in who is going to succeed His Excellency,” he said.
