The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 parliamentary candidate for Tema West has claimed that illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, has increased significantly because the Gold Board established by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) is conducting business with illegal operators.
Dennis Amfo-Sefah argued that while the NDC was in opposition, it capitalised politically on the issue of illegal mining.
However, he contended that since they assumed office, the situation has deteriorated. He stated that the NDC’s previous rhetoric successfully mobilised civil society, academia, trade unions, and private individuals against the former government.
He further noted that despite former President Akufo-Addo’s pledge to put his presidency on the line to combat galamsey, the NDC and its affiliates dismissed these efforts.
He recalled how individuals such as Sam George suggested that any government truly committed to ending illegal mining could do so within 48 hours.
Speaking on the programme Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM with host Kwabena Agyapong, Amfo-Sefah suggested that illegal miners have grown increasingly emboldened.
He opined that they are expanding their illicit operations because a state body is now purchasing their illegally acquired gold.
The former President placed his presidency on the line in the fight against galamsey, yet we had the likes of Sam George saying the President could have ended it in 48 hours. Under the NDC, we now have a Gold Board purchasing gold from illegal miners. Galamsey has worsened because the miners have become bold, knowing the Gold Board is doing business with them.”
