Blame the NCCE for low voter turnout – Political Analyst

March 5, 2026
VOTERS

Dr Emmanuel Alex Nti, a political analyst, has criticised the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) for failing to execute its constitutional duty as mandated by law.

He stated that low voter turnout in elections, whether general or by-elections, is a direct reflection of the NCCE’s ineffectiveness.

In his view, it is the NCCE’s statutory responsibility to conduct public education campaigns to enlighten citizens on the importance of participating in elections.

Dr Nti’s remarks were in response to the low voter turnout recorded during the Ayawaso East by-election.

While acknowledging that multiple factors could have contributed to the low turnout, he maintained that the NCCE’s failure to adequately educate the public on the significance of exercising their franchise is a critical oversight.

“I will not attribute the low voter turnout to the Electoral Commission but rather hold the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) accountable. It is their duty to enlighten Ghanaians on the significance of participating in elections and voting for leaders of their choice. The NCCE should enhance its efforts. Unfortunately, their presence is hardly felt.”

Meanwhile, he commended the Ghana Police Service, the Electoral Commission, and the political parties, as well as independent candidates who participated in the elections for maintaining a violence-free environment.

He cautioned the political class against taking voters for granted after securing power, as this could erode trust and lead to voter apathy.
