A couple have been apprehended in Awutu Bontrase, located in the Awutu Senya West District of the Central Region, on suspicion of beheading their three-day-old baby boy and disposing of the body in a refuse dump.
According to gathered reports, the baby’s body was discovered with severe mutilations, including the removal of the head and left hand.
The remains were found on the refuse dump after community members conducted a search.
It is alleged that 24-year-old Abena Benewa gave birth at home, and the traditional birth attendant declared the baby deceased.
Preparations were underway for burial, but the father, 26-year-old Bright Ashiao, took the body, claiming he would handle the burial arrangements.
Further investigation revealed that the husband proceeded to bury the baby at the same location where the body was later found.
Some community members have raised concerns that the couple may have had sinister motives, possibly related to money rituals, although the police have not confirmed this.
Hon. Prince Larbie, the assemblyman for the Bontrase electoral area, confirmed the incident and expressed concern about the increasing involvement of youth in the community in criminal activities.
Chief Superintendent Edmond Nyamekye, the Awutu Beraku District Police Commander, stated that the suspects are currently in police custody and will face court proceedings soon.
Reporting on the incident, Opanyin Darko noted that the community is shocked, and residents are demanding that the couple be held accountable. The traditional birth attendant has also been taken into custody to assist with ongoing investigations.
