Former President John Dramani Mahama has revealed plans to construct a new runway at the Sunyani Airport, enabling the facility to accommodate larger aircraft and enhance air connectivity in the region.
He stated that this development will improve air travel access to the Bono Region, thereby supporting economic activity by facilitating the operation of larger aircraft into and out of Sunyani.
This announcement was made during his address at the Resetting Ghana Tour held in Sunyani on Thursday, March 19, 2026.
President Mahama highlighted that the existing airport infrastructure is insufficient, particularly noting that the current runway is too short to handle jet aircraft.
The President said that although expanding the existing runway had been considered, surrounding developments make it impractical
“The old Sunyani Airport has stalled. The runway is only about 1.5 kilometres. Because of that, planes that can land in Kumasi cannot come here,” he said.
“That requires that we expand the runway, but because of the buildings in the area, we may not be able to work on it. So, we decided to build a new runway for the airport,” he added.
He also revealed that traditional leaders in the area have released land for the project, and design plans are in place for a new 2.4-kilometre runway capable of accommodating larger aircraft.
“The chiefs have already given out lands for that. The design exists, and the new runway will be about 2.4 kilometres to be able to land any plane of any size,” he said.
He noted that the government will return to cut sod for construction at the appropriate time.
