After years of pushing for the well-established establishment of a new college of education in the Jomoro Constituency of the Western Region, the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that the government will establish a new college of education at Ezinlibo, Jomoro.

The establishment is part of efforts to expand teacher training capacity in the country.

The push for the College of Education in Jomoro was initiated by a former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of the Ghana Armed Forces, Peter Augustine Blay (rtd), during the late President Prof. John Evans Atta Mills era but could not succeed.

The former CDS joined forces with the Member of Parliament for Jomoro, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, to push the same agenda under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Akuffo-Addo era to have the college established, but that also did not materialise. In my 2024 campaign, I promised the good of Jomoro that in the second coming of H.E. John Dramani Mahama, Jomoro will have a new college of education, the MP said.

In the year 2025, Madam Affo-Toffey, who is also the Deputy Minister of Transport, joined forces again with Lt General Blay (rtd) to push for the agenda. They visited the minister for education, Haruna Iddrisu, who promised to work on it, and finally, they have gotten this far.

Speaking at the inauguration of the governing council of John Bosco College of Education on March 31, the minister said the initiative is aimed at improving the supply of trained teachers and enhancing academic performance, particularly in underserved areas.

“I am happy to note that the government has taken a decision to establish a college of education at Ezinlibo, Jomoro, in the Western Region,” he stated.

Mr Iddrisu disclosed that discussions are already underway with key stakeholders to facilitate the project.

“This morning I met with the CEO to discuss this initiative. Pursuant to its mandate to support communities within its catchment areas, and in consultation with the Director-General of GTEC, the government has taken a policy decision to establish a new teacher training college at Ezinlibo, Jomoro,” he said.

He added that construction is expected to begin in 2027, subject to the availability of resources.

“Work on it will commence somewhere in 2027, subject to the availability of resources that I intend to generate,” he noted, emphasising the need for a training institution in the enclave. “We need a teacher training institution in that area to serve that particular enclave.”
