Plans to increase the price of sachet water across the country have been shelved following a successful intervention by the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry.
The proposed price adjustment, which was scheduled to take effect today, Monday 6 April, has been suspended indefinitely.
The move comes after the Ministry engaged in eleventh-hour talks with the Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association (GPMA) and the National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers (NASPAWAP).
In a statement released today, the Ministry praised the two associations for their cooperation and for prioritising market stability. The government noted that the decision to freeze prices is a crucial step in protecting Ghanaian consumers from additional financial pressure.
The Ministry has assured the general public that the cost of “pure water” remains unchanged. Retailers and vendors are expected to continue selling at the existing rates, and the public is encouraged to report any arbitrary price hikes.
“This decision reflects our commitment to protecting consumers and ensuring market stability,” the ministry’s Public Relations Unit stated. “The Ministry assures the public that the price of sachet water will not increase today.”
While the immediate threat of a price hike has been averted, the underlying issues facing the industry remain.
According to the manufacturers, production costs, driven by the price of plastic film and fuel, have put significant strain on their businesses.
To address these concerns, a crunch meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday 8 April.
The Ministry will sit down with the leadership of both the GPMA and NASPAWAP to find a sustainable way forward for the sector.
The government has indicated it remains “steadfast” in its resolve to work alongside trade associations to resolve industry grievances swiftly while ensuring that essential goods remain affordable for all.
