Savannah Region: President Mahama announces plan to build new STEM schools in Tinga and Busunu

President John Dramani Mahama has assured residents of the Savannah Region that his administration will spearhead an accelerated infrastruc to buildture development programme designed to drive economic growth and enhance local livelihoods.

The President shared this vision while serving as the Guest of Honour at the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Gonjaland Youth Association in Buipe on Sunday, 5 April 2026.

The milestone event was held under the theme, “Five Decades of Progress: Empowering Gonjaland Youth for the Future.”

Central to the President’s address was a commitment to transforming the regional educational landscape.

He announced advanced plans to establish dedicated STEM schools in Tinga and Busunu, alongside a commitment to upgrade all Senior High Schools across the region to Category A status.

Expanding on this vision, President Mahama noted that “Education is the bridge between where we are and where we aspire to be and so we are going to invest heavily in education in the Savannah Region.”

In an immediate response to local needs, the President directed the Member of Parliament for Yapei-Kusawgu, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, to provide a new bus for Buipe Senior High School.

This directive followed a formal appeal by the Paramount Chief of Buipe, Buipewura Abdulai Jinapor II.

To further foster athletic talent and youth engagement, the President pledged the construction of a modern sports stadium in Damongo, which is set to be named the Savannah Sports Stadium.

Speaking at the same event, the Paramount Chief of the Buipe Traditional Area and Vice President of the National House of Chiefs, Buipewura Abdulai Jinapor II, raised critical regional concerns.

He urged the government to intensify efforts to eradicate illegal mining activities currently threatening the ecosystem along the Black Volta.

Furthermore, he requested expedited support for the construction of the road from Mpaha Junction to Debre, a project that is currently in the procurement phase.
