Water Producers Dispute Ministry’s Claims of Price Hike Suspension

April 6, 2026

The National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers (NASPAWAP) has responded to a statement from the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Agribusiness claiming that the scheduled increase in water prices has been suspended.

According to the Association, it was unaware of any such development, noting that the Ministry’s directive has not yet reached its leadership.

Last week, the group announced an upward revision of sachet water prices, which are set to take effect today, Monday, April 6, 2026.

This decision was formalized in a statement issued on Thursday, April 2, 2026. NASPAWAP explained that the price hike is a direct result of a global shortage of polymers and rising production costs driven by the ongoing conflict in Iran.

Under the newly recommended pricing structure, a bag containing thirty 500ml sachets is set at an ex-factory price of GH¢8, an ex-truck price of GH¢10, and a maximum retail price of GH¢15.

However, the Trade Ministry issued its own statement indicating that the nationwide price increase had been shelved following a successful intervention.

In today’s release, the Ministry praised the relevant associations for their cooperation and for prioritizing market stability, describing the price freeze as a crucial step in protecting Ghanaian consumers from additional financial pressure.

The producers have strongly disputed this narrative. In telephone interviews, Executive Member Mr. Richard Agyei and former Public Relations Officer Agyapong Ntrah both stated that they have not been engaged by the government.

According to the two officials, they remain committed to the price increases as originally announced. They emphasized that while they are prepared to engage in dialogue, they currently have no knowledge of the statement issued by the Ministry.
