According to emerging details, Ken Ofori-Atta, Ghana’s former Finance Minister, has been released from the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Having been detained since January 2026 over issues pertaining to his immigration status, Mr. Ofori-Atta, a former appointee of President Akufo-Addo, is no longer listed on the detention roster.
Officials at the facility confirmed his release, though they did not provide further information.
A public notice issued by his lawyers, Minkah-Premo, Osei-Bonsu, Bruce-Cathline and Partners (MPOBB), on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, clarified that the detention stemmed from queries about his continued stay in the United States, rather than any criminal misconduct.
Ken Ofori-Atta faces over 70 corruption charges in Ghana, including allegations of a GH¢1.4 billion financial loss to the state, and the Ghanaian government has submitted an extradition request to the U.S.
Mr. Ofori-Atta is set to reappear in Virginia’s Annandale Immigration Court on April 27 regarding his immigration status.
His visitor visa was revoked after he failed to leave the US by the directed date of November 29, 2025.
