The Sefwi Bodi Circuit Court has remanded Vivian Anto, a woman accused of cutting off her daughter’s index toe with scissors at Sefwi Juaboso, into police custody for a medical and psychiatric evaluation.
Anto is scheduled to reappear before the court on April 21, 2026. During the proceedings, defence counsel Ebenezer Abiaw requested the court to grant his client temporary release, citing her ongoing battle with a mental health condition and the need for family care.
However, the prosecution, led by Superintendent Isaac Ostin, opposed the request, arguing that there is no evidence to support the claim of mental illness and that Anto was coherent when she gave a statement to the police.
The prosecutor also noted that neither the family nor the defence had presented medical records to support the claim.
During the court proceedings, Anto remained unresponsive and declined to answer questions posed by the presiding judge, James Mensah Donkor.
Due to Anto’s lack of response, the judge ruled that the court could not proceed effectively and ordered Anto’s remand into police custody for a psychiatric evaluation.
The case has been adjourned until April 21, 2026, for further hearing.
