The Tema Regional Branch of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has issued a formal apology to customers affected by recent power disruptions following a fire at the Akosombo GRIDCo substation.

The Public Relations Officer for the region, Madam Sakyibea Mensah, stated that the incident has impacted a significant majority of customers within the region and across Ghana.

She noted that the affected substation played a critical role in the national grid.

According to Madam Mensah:”The substation that caught fire in Akosombo helped us in supplying power to several customers across the country, including the Tema Region. It is beyond Tema because we have customers in parts of the Ashanti, Central, and Greater Accra regions, among others. The number of affected customers is high. This is not intentional; GRIDCo has been up to the task of dealing with the matter.”

Speaking on the programme Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM on Monday, 27 April, she explained that the incident resulted in the loss of approximately 1,000 megawatts of power.

However, she stressed that supply has remained relatively stable in many parts of the country despite this deficit.

Madam Mensah highlighted that since last Thursday, the ECG has worked extensively to ensure stable power evacuation for customers in the face of these technical challenges.

She dismissed claims that the current situation constitutes “dumsor”, arguing that a load-shedding timetable is not required at this stage.

She maintained that the situation is being actively managed, with restoration works ongoing across the transmission network.

Regarding the demand for a scheduled timetable, the PRO suggested it would not be ideal as the underlying technical issues could be resolved by the time such a schedule was implemented.
