The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has established a committee to investigate the escalating cost of hostel accommodation at tertiary institutions nationwide.
The intervention follows widespread student grievances regarding exorbitant fees, a deficit of bed spaces, and the increasing difficulty of securing adequate housing.
Many students contend that the current crisis is placing an immense financial strain on their families.
Mr Iddrisu announced the initiative during the swearing-in ceremony for the governing councils of the University of Engineering and Agricultural Sciences.
He assured stakeholders that the government would act to guarantee fairness and affordability in student housing.
The committee is mandated to consult with university authorities, private hostel operators, student unions, and regulatory bodies to identify the root causes and propose practical solutions.
“Be assured that the government will simply not run on the principles of private partnership, where unlimited fee guidelines will dictate the pace. We will be social, and we will reflect social values and concerns in the delivery of that public good,” he stated.
