A 36-year-old carpenter has hanged himself in police custody after being arrested for defiling his 13-year-old stepdaughter at Ayensudo, a suburb of Elmina in the Komenda Edina Eguafo Municipality of the Central Region.
According to the police, on May 10, 2026, at about 11:00 am, the station officer of Agyei Krom police station received information from the counter NCO that suspect Emmanuel Cudjoe, 38 years of age, who was arrested at 5:00 am the same day.
He reportedly hanged himself in the cells with a tin cloth he removed from the edge of the blanket he slept on.
On receipt of the information, the Elmina District Police command and the Regional Crime Scene Management team proceeded to the Agyei Krom police station.
The officers visited the cells and found the suspect hanging against the wall.
It was observed that there were no marks of violence on the body of the suspect.
The deceased Emmanuel Cudjoe was a carpenter and a native of Ayensudo, a suburb of Elmina.
The scene was processed by the Crime Scene Management team, and the body was removed and sent to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by the medical officer on duty.
The body of the deceased has since been deposited at the same facility’s mortuary for preservation, awaiting autopsy.
The relatives of the deceased were informed of the incident.
The case is under investigation; no arrest has been made so far.
