The Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, opened Parliament’s second meeting of the second session today with a message of gratitude and confidence in Ghana’s institutions, describing the nation as a beacon of hope despite ongoing challenges.

“I will begin by expressing profound gratitude to Almighty God for his grace, protection and mercies upon our beloved country,” the Majority Leader told the House.

He acknowledged that whilst Ghana “has been through many challenges and uncertainties”, the country continues to “remain strong, serving as a beacon of hope and of inspiration to others on the continent and beyond.”

Mr Ayariga expressed immense confidence in the stability of the nation’s political framework, stating that “Our democracy remains resilient and is growing stronger with the passage of each day,” and adding that “Our institutions continue to function effectively, albeit various challenges still persist.”

The Majority Leader praised the Speaker, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, and his deputies for their “dedication and patriotism to the nation,” noting that “the nation will always be in your debt for your selfless dedication in serving the motherland.”

He also commended Members of Parliament for their industriousness during the recess.

“Though we were on recess, you were never on vacation,” he remarked, explaining that “I monitored the work of MPs delivering in our various constituencies and at committees and various international events at which Ghana had to be represented.”

Some members represented the country at ECOWAS and Pan-African Parliament activities.

According to Mahama Ayariga, these constituency engagements, committee work with stakeholders, and exposure to international issues have “better prepared” MPs for the legislative period ahead.

As Parliament prepares to tackle key legislation and oversight matters in the coming weeks, he concluded that “I am indeed confident that the hope and aspirations of our people, though tested, remain alive and fortified”.
