The Tour Operators Union of Ghana (TOUGHA) has officially welcomed the government’s launch of a new electronic visa (e-visa) platform, describing it as a major breakthrough for the country’s tourism industry.

In a statement signed by its president, Yvonne Donkor, the union noted that the fully digital application process will significantly enhance Ghana’s tourism competitiveness on the continent.

According to TOUGHA, the initiative under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama will streamline travel planning for international tourists, business travelers, conference delegates, and members of the African diaspora.

The association highlighted the practical relief the platform brings, pointing out that traditional visa procedures have historically acted as a deterrent for potential visitors.

“As tour operators, we understand firsthand how cumbersome visa procedures can sometimes discourage travel decisions,” the statement said.

“The new e-visa system will help remove many of those barriers by simplifying the application process, reducing waiting times and enhancing the overall visitor experience even before travellers arrive in Ghana.”

A major highlight of the new regime praised by the union is the waiver of visa fees for holders of African passports.

TOUGHA lauded this policy as a bold Pan-African move that aligns with regional integration and intra-African trade while cementing Ghana’s standing as a beacon of Pan-Africanism.

The rollout of the digital platform involved a collaborative approach between the state and private stakeholders.

TOUGHA acknowledged the contributions of its own members, including Kwaku Passah Sr, Fuseini Nawaru, and Michael Orleans, who served on the private sector consultative team to help realize the project.

The union emphasized that this collaboration underscores the vital role public-private partnerships play in driving national development and investment promotion.

Looking ahead, the union expressed strong confidence that the e-visa system will increase visitor arrivals, boost destination confidence, and elevate Ghana’s appeal in a highly competitive global travel market.

TOUGHA reaffirmed its commitment to working alongside government agencies and sector stakeholders to promote the country as Africa’s preferred destination for leisure, heritage, business, and MICE tourism.
