The National Labour Commission (NLC) has directed the Komfo Anokye Doctors’ Association (KADA) to immediately halt its indefinite industrial action, declaring that the strike notice was improperly served and breaches national labor laws.
The directive follows a strike declaration that took effect on June 6, 2026, which KADA initiated over grievances regarding operational and administrative decisions at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
According to an official summons signed by the NLC’s Acting Executive Secretary, Dr. Bernice A. Welbeck, the commission learned of the industrial action through media reports and subsequent correspondence tracking.
The NLC maintains that KADA failed to comply with the necessary regulatory procedures required to launch a legal strike.
Consequently, the regulatory body has invoked its statutory powers to demand an immediate return to work.
“Consequently, the Commission in exercise of its powers under section 139(d) of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651) directs KADA to call off the strike immediately as the action contravenes sections 162 and 163 of Act 651,” Dr. Welbeck stated in the order.
To resolve the underlying dispute, the NLC has officially summoned leadership from the doctors’ association and relevant stakeholders to a formal hearing at the commission’s headquarters.
“The parties are hereby summoned to appear before the Commission on Wednesday, 10th June, 2026 at 2pm for a hearing of the issues in dispute,” the summons noted.
The directive has been widely distributed to key healthcare and government officials, including the Minister of Health, the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, and the Ghana Medical Association, as authorities move to prevent prolonged disruptions to healthcare delivery.
