Accra’s Mayor, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has verified that the number of fatalities resulting from the collapse of a four-storey building at Avenor in North Kaneshie has increased to three.
The surge in the death toll occurred following the passing of one of the two individuals who had been pulled from the debris alive.
Mayor Allotey noted that the casualties include the proprietor of a Mothercare retail store that functioned inside the destroyed edifice.
A total of four individuals were trapped when the property crumbled during the early morning hours of Sunday, June 7.
Emergency responders initially extracted two survivors who were quickly transported to a nearby medical facility, alongside two individuals who were discovered deceased.
The subsequent death of one of the hospitalized victims brought the official body count to three.
The four-story property, which is thought to have been erected around 2020 or 2021, served a dual purpose by hosting both local residents and commercial entities, such as the Mothercare boutique.
An inquiry to determine the exact cause for the disaster is currently underway.
