June 8, 2026

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed that only one survivor remains following the tragic building collapse at Avenor, and that individual is currently receiving medical treatment.

According to the Service, two people initially died at the scene, while two others who sustained serious injuries were rushed to the Police Hospital.

Unfortunately, one of the rescued victims passed away at the hospital on Monday, June 8, 2026.

The sole remaining survivor has since been transferred to the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge Hospital) for further care.

Providing an update on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, DO II Desmond Ackah of the GNFS Public Relations Department stated that the patient at Ridge Hospital is responding well to treatment.

“The number of deaths following the collapse has increased to three. Two people were initially confirmed dead, but the third person who was on admission at the Police Hospital died. The other survivor has been transferred to the Ridge Hospital for further care. We are hopeful that the individual will recover from the injuries.”

Addressing the broader issue, DO II Ackah noted that structural failures are frequently caused by the engagement of uncertified contractors and the use of substandard building materials.

He urged the Ghanaian public, particularly property developers, to hire qualified professionals and invest in quality materials to prevent future disasters, warning that relying on inferior resources and inexperienced labor proves far more expensive in the long run.

He also assured citizens that the GNFS remains fully committed to collaborating with relevant regulatory institutions to enforce safety standards and prevent similar tragedies.

Because the collapsed commercial structure was less than five years old, DO II Ackah raised fundamental questions regarding its integrity, adding that official investigations are actively underway to determine the exact cause of the disaster.
