The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana has expressed gratitude to the government for introducing a free fertilizer distribution initiative.

According to the association’s Programmes Officer, Dr. Benjamin Sarfo, members have received both chemical and organic fertilizers alongside agricultural drones.

He noted that Agriculture Minister Eric Opoku announced the intervention as part of a broader strategy to support smallholder farmers with the essential inputs required to improve yields and enhance livelihoods.

Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Dr. Sarfo explained that the distribution will benefit thousands of farmers, particularly those cultivating staple food crops.

The introduction of agricultural drones to selected communities aims to promote technology-driven farming.

These drones will handle crop monitoring, precision spraying, field mapping, and the early detection of pests and diseases, allowing farmers to boost efficiency while cutting production costs.

While appreciative, Dr. Sarfo acknowledged that the initial supply of 40,000 fertilizers falls short for an association boasting over a million members.

However, the ministry has assured them that additional inputs will be distributed once further budget is allocated.

This is not the first time the ministry has provided such support, prompting continued appreciation from the association’s leadership.

Reflecting on the impact of the initiative, Dr. Sarfo stated: “we are particularly grateful to the government and the Ministry for this support. We received 40,000 fertilizers but we also raised concerns that it was too small. However, we acknowledged that it was far better than nothing at all. They have assured us that mire would-be distributed when the Ministry is allocated budget”.

He concluded by underscoring their shared vision for the sector, adding: “The initiative demonstrates government’s commitment to transforming agriculture through innovation and targeted support programmes. We will support the government in ensuring that the agric sector and farmers especially succeed in what they do so we will continue to feed Ghana. Use of fertilizers and modern farming technologies re critical components towards increasing food production, strengthening the agricultural value chain, and reducing post-harvest losses.”
