A sales assistant who stole GH¢353,471 from his employer under the pretext of funding his upcoming wedding has been convicted and fined by the Adentan Circuit Court, unravelling a wider fraud scheme that has implicated several accomplices.

The convict, Alfred Mensah, faced charges of stealing and entered a guilty plea during his appearance.

The presiding judge subsequently ordered Mensah to refund the stolen money in full. He was also handed a GH¢12,000 fine, with the alternative of serving a two-year prison sentence if he fails to pay.

The prosecution’s case expanded beyond Mensah as investigators uncovered a network of individuals who allegedly benefited from the stolen funds.

Standing trial alongside him are Mary Asantewaa, a local trader, and Emmanuel Okyere, a pastor, both of whom face charges of abetment of crime and dishonestly receiving stolen property.

Three other individuals — Samuel Dika, Miriam Okai, and 59-year-old trader Vida Yeboah — have also been charged with dishonestly receiving stolen property.

Unlike Mensah, all five co-accused individuals maintained their innocence and pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them.

The court granted each of them bail set at GH¢353,471 with justification. The case has been adjourned for further hearings as the prosecution prepares to present evidence against the remaining defendants.
