Heavy morning downpours have triggered widespread flooding across several parts of the country, prompting the Ministry of the Interior to issue an urgent public safety advisory.
Citizens are being directed to halt all non-essential travel and remain in safe locations until weather conditions stabilize.
The deluge, which caught many commuters on their way to work, has submerged key roadways and overwhelmed local drainage systems.
In response, the sector minister has called for extreme caution, warning that the situation remains fluid and potentially hazardous.
“As a precautionary public safety measure, members of the public are advised to remain where they are until conditions improve,” stated the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak.
“Those who are safely at home are urged to stay at home, while those who are at their workplaces or other safe locations should remain there until it is safe to travel.”
Emergency services, including the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Armed Forces, and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), have deployed personnel nationwide.
These teams are currently monitoring vulnerable zones, managing gridlocked traffic, and conducting rescue operations in hard-hit areas.
Authorities have issued a strict warning to commuters regarding the dangers of navigating submerged infrastructure. Pedestrians and motorists are being told to avoid crossing flooded bridges or waterways entirely, as rapidly rising currents pose an immediate threat to life and property.
Furthermore, residents living in low-lying, flood-prone communities are being instructed to evacuate to higher ground immediately.
“The safety and well-being of the public remain Government’s highest priority,” Mohammed-Mubarak emphasised, adding that the ministry is actively tracking the disaster to coordinate relief efforts.
“The Ministry extends its concern to all persons affected by the flooding and assures the public that every effort is being made to provide the necessary assistance and ensure public safety.”
Officials are urging citizens to remain calm, follow the instructions of emergency workers on the ground, and rely strictly on official channels for weather updates to prevent the spread of misinformation.
Individuals requiring emergency rescue or wishing to report persons in distress are advised to immediately contact the police and NADMO via the toll-free emergency lines 112 or 18555, or the fire service via 192.
