Following extensive flooding caused by record rainfall, President John Dramani Mahama conducted an aerial inspection of affected communities across Accra today.

To address the immediate crisis, the President announced a series of emergency measures, including direct support for displaced families and the release of contingency funds for relief efforts.

He issued a directive to identify and immediately remove all structures obstructing major drainage channels.

President Mahama extended his sympathies to the affected families and commended the Ghana Armed Forces, the 48 Engineers Regiment, NADMO, the Ghana Police Service, and other emergency services for their swift rescue operations.

“Recurring floods continue to exact a heavy toll on communities and livelihoods,” the President noted, stressing that a lasting solution requires both government action and civic responsibility.

To break this cycle, the government will urgently convene the National Security Council to deliberate on stricter enforcement measures and long-term structural resilience strategies. Looking beyond immediate relief, the administration also revealed a broader 20-year development blueprint.

This long-term plan aims to permanently ease demographic pressure on Accra by establishing a new, modern growth centre outside the capital.
