The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has commenced a week-long metro-wide clean-up exercise to evacuate accumulated waste, clear flood-related debris, desilt drains and improve sanitation across the metropolis following the recent floods.

According to the Assembly in a press release signed by the Head of Public Affairs, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, the exercise is being carried out across the three sub-metros of the Assembly, namely Ashiedu Keteke, Ablekuma South and Okaikoi South, as part of the AMA’s sustained efforts to protect public health, prevent flooding, improve environmental sanitation and promote collective responsibility for keeping Accra clean.

The Assembly said the week-long exercise also coincides with the July edition of the National Sanitation Day clean-up exercise scheduled for Saturday, July 4, 2026.

It said all shops, stalls, table-top businesses, markets, hawking activities and other commercial operations within the metropolis were expected to suspend operations during the clean-up period on Saturday to enable traders, shop owners, transport operators, residents and other stakeholders to fully participate in the exercise.

The release said activities to be carried out during the exercise would include the evacuation of household and community waste, removal of flood-related debris, desilting and clearing of drains, removal of refuse from markets and public spaces, clearing of choked waterways, sweeping of streets, cleaning of road curbs and general sanitation improvement across communities.

To support the exercise, the AMA said it had deployed additional trucks, compactors and sanitation tools, including wheelbarrows, shovels, rakes and brooms, to collect and evacuate waste from designated points to approved disposal sites.

The Assembly urged residents to gather accumulated waste from their homes, shops, workplaces and communities and place them at designated collection points for onward evacuation by waste collection teams.

The release further indicated that, as part of measures to improve public participation in sanitation management, the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, had launched a dedicated WhatsApp line to enable residents to report accumulated waste in their communities for prompt evacuation and action.

It said the dedicated WhatsApp number, 054 491 4628, would also enable residents to report sanitation offences to the AMA for enforcement and possible prosecution in accordance with the Assembly’s sanitation bye-laws.

Residents were encouraged to take pictures or videos of accumulated waste, choked drains, indiscriminate dumping, illegal refuse sites, blocked waterways and other sanitation-related offences and forward them to the Assembly through the WhatsApp line, together with clear locations, to support timely response.

The AMA said the introduction of the WhatsApp line formed part of efforts to strengthen community involvement in sanitation enforcement and improve the Assembly’s ability to respond quickly to waste-related complaints across the metropolis.

The Assembly called on residents, traders, shop owners, transport operators, food vendors, corporate institutions, organisations, NGOs, religious bodies, youth groups, community-based organisations and all stakeholders within the three sub-metros to actively participate in the exercise.

The Assembly stressed that enforcement would remain a key component of the exercise, particularly during the July 4 National Sanitation Day clean-up.
