GTEC names unaccredited learning centres and institutions with expired accreditation

July 8, 2026
GTEC

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has issued a public warning regarding several unaccredited learning centres operating under public universities, alongside a growing list of tertiary institutions whose institutional accreditation has officially expired.

In a public notice released by its Corporate Affairs department, the regulatory body explicitly named multiple regional campuses and learning centres that currently lack the mandate to operate.

Affected operations include various regional learning centres of the University of Ghana, specific satellite campuses of the University of Education Winneba and the University for Development Studies, as well as local centres run by Takoradi Technical University and Methodist University Ghana.

Furthermore, GTEC revealed that thirty-six tertiary institutions across the country are currently operating with expired institutional accreditation.

The comprehensive list spans various sectors of higher education, including prominent nursing and midwifery training colleges, agricultural institutions, and private university colleges operating in major cities and regional districts.

The commission has strongly urged prospective students, parents, and guardians to conduct thorough background checks and verify the status of all academic programmes and institutions directly with the regulatory body before committing to enrolment.

According to the statement, registering with unaccredited bodies carries severe consequences, including the potential loss of academic time, significant financial waste, and the invalidation of future career prospects.

GTEC maintained that the publication of these lists remains a vital measure to protect the public from exploitation and to curb the spread of misleading information within the national education sector.
