Three people have now died following the violent confrontation between residents and police officers in Ghana’s Western North Region.

Two victims died at the scene in Sefwi Sayerano, in the Juaboso District, during a raid by the Sefwi Wiawso Divisional Police Command targeting a suspected drug dealer.

One victim has since succumbed to gunshot wounds in hospital, including one who died this morning.

In response to the deaths, angry local youths launched coordinated retaliatory attacks at dawn, setting fire to police checkpoints at both Asempanaye and Asawinso.

Local officials have made urgent appeals for calm as regional security forces attempt to defuse tensions.

The Juaboso District Chief Executive, Alexander Adu Quist, visited the bereaved families and wounded residents to offer condolences on behalf of the government, describing the incident as “unfortunate”.

“I urge the families to remain calm and allow the ongoing investigations to take their course,” Mr Quist said, adding that the government is committed to ensuring justice is served.

The Western North Regional Minister, Petty Brentum, has also intervened, calling for an immediate end to the unrest to allow police investigators to safely enter the area.

Local leaders have promised a comprehensive independent inquiry into the use of lethal force during the initial arrest operation, but the atmosphere in the district remains highly charged.
