A Brussels Airlines flight bound for Lomé was forced to make an emergency turnaround and land back at Kotoka International Airport in Accra on Monday evening following a technical fault shortly after departure.

Flight SN278 departed Accra at 18:06 GMT on 20th July 2026, but the flight crew was compelled to abort the journey minutes into the flight. The aircraft made a safe precautionary landing back in the Ghanaian capital at 18:18 GMT.

The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) confirmed the incident, revealing that the airline subsequently cancelled the flight to allow for safety checks and thorough investigations into the glitch.

“The technical issue that necessitated the aircraft’s return is currently being investigated by the airline in accordance with established aviation safety procedures and under the oversight of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority,” the regulator stated.

Commending the crew’s quick decision-making, the GCAA praised the pilots for following standard safety protocols during the emergency, adding, “the safety of passengers and crew remains the highest priority.”

The aviation regulator further reassured the public that affected passengers are receiving proper care from airline officials in line with the Ghana Civil Aviation (Economic) Directives, 2019 Part 2 on Consumer Protection, while reiterating that Ghana’s aviation safety and security oversight system remains robust.
