The former Minister of State in charge of Finance, Abena Osei-Asare, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to order a full inquiry into reported operational losses at the Ghana Gold Board (GOLDBOD).
The Atewa East MP, who heads Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee, stated that the financial shortfalls linkable to GOLDBOD demand immediate examination to clarify how the funds were lost and whether proper safeguards were maintained. Her push follows reports referencing an International Monetary Fund (IMF) assessment that attributes a $1.7bn loss to the state body.
Addressing reporters on Tuesday, 11 August, Osei-Asare argued that the lost revenue could have been redirected to critical public services, noting that GH¢6bn of the figure would have been sufficient to hire unemployed nurses across the country. She further challenged President Mahama to deliver on earlier promises regarding underperforming state-owned enterprises.
“President Mahama, we are asking you to call for proper and further investigations into what is happening at GOLDBOD. I am temporarily relieved that at least the Bank of Ghana from 1st of July, 2026 is no more spending on GOLDBOD as it used to be.
“President Mahama, somewhere last year, you engaged SOEs and then you mentioned that SOEs that are not making profits or SOEs that are not thriving, you either close them down or you merge them, so we want you to walk the talk. Look into GOLDBOD.”
