The Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has acknowledged the severe devastation caused by last month’s floods across various parts of the country, noting that the disaster resulted in loss of life, displaced families, destroyed local businesses, and wreaked havoc on public infrastructure.

Addressing Parliament during the presentation of the Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review of the 2026 Budget on Thursday, 23 July 2026, the Minister pointed out that the situation was part of a broader regional challenge.

“Ghana was not alone. Similar floods also affected Nigeria, Lokoja and Cotonou highlighting the growing flood risk across West African coastline and the effect of climate change,” he told the House.

Dr Forson explained that the government acted swiftly in response to the crisis by visiting the most severely impacted communities, releasing emergency relief funds, and launching a nationwide clean-up exercise.

He added that, following directives from President John Mahama, additional resources are currently being allocated towards ongoing dredging projects and the construction of critical drainage systems in the affected areas.

To address the recurring issue long-term, Dr Forson revealed that the government will provide full funding in the 2027 Budget and Medium Term to deliver a comprehensive and permanent solution to flooding in Accra and other high-risk areas nationwide.

He stated that President Mahama issued the directive, with the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources tasked to formulate the execution strategy.

Concluding his address, the Finance Minister expressed confidence in the administration’s handling of the national economy over the past eighteen months.

“Mr Speaker, I stand before this house with a deep sense of pride and confidence born out of strong performance in the last one and half years in the management of the Ghanaian economy,” he stated.
