The Minister of Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to expanding higher education infrastructure, assuring management of the University for Development Studies (UDS) of full state support for its Yendi Campus, medical school, and teaching hospital projects.
Hon. Iddrisu gave the assurance when the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of UDS, Prof. Mohammed Muniru Iddrisu, paid a courtesy call on him at the Ministry following his assumption of office.
Addressing the leadership of the institution, the Minister lauded UDS for its pivotal role in widening access to tertiary education, particularly for students across northern Ghana and surrounding areas.
Hon. Iddrisu emphasised that President John Dramani Mahama’s administration remains firmly dedicated to respecting university governance structures and has no intention of micromanaging tertiary institutions.
“The government respects the administrative independence and governance structures of our universities — particularly their governing councils and management teams,” the Minister stated, reaffirming the state’s plan to work collaboratively with university leadership to advance higher education nationwide.
To accelerate government intervention, the Education Minister urged the management of UDS to clearly articulate the university’s immediate and strategic needs with proper justification.
This, he noted, would allow the Ministry and relevant state agencies to assess and allocate targeted resources effectively.
The strategic partnership between the Ministry and UDS is expected to fast-track the operationalisation of the Yendi Campus and strengthen healthcare training through the institution’s medical school and teaching hospital setup.
