Mills Never Ran a ‘Family, Friends and Concubines’ Government – Frimpong-Boateng

Former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, has lauded the leadership style of the late President John Evans Atta Mills, stating that he never ran a government dominated by family members, friends, or concubines during his three-and-a-half years in office.

According to the world-renowned heart surgeon, the late leader genuinely understood that governance was fundamentally about selflessness and public service—not an avenue for personal enrichment or the gratification of political elites.

Speaking at the 14th Anniversary Commemorative Lecture held in honour of the late President, affectionately remembered as Asomdwee Hene (King of Peace), Prof. Frimpong-Boateng stressed that President Mills prioritized the welfare of ordinary Ghanaian workers who continuously churn out sweat for the nation’s growth.

“President Mills understood that leadership is not about power, but rather about service and about the Ghanaian worker who needs better social amenities,” he remarked.

Reflecting on the nation’s political trajectory 14 years after President Mills’ passing, the former minister under the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration noted that Ghanaians owe it to the late statesman to uphold the principles he championed.

He urged current and future public officials to exhibit the courage required to lead with humility, plan for future generations rather than the next election, and place the collective interest of citizens above personal political expediency.

Prof. Frimpong-Boateng further admonished that genuine nation-building is not achieved through media spectacles or political posturing.

“The battle for Ghana’s soul is not fought in press conferences or party conventions,” he stated. “It is fought in the decisions of public servants who choose honesty over convenience.”
