According to a press statement signed by Superintendent of Police Godwin Ahianyo, Head of the Public Affairs Unit for the Ashanti Regional Police Command, officers on routine patrol were alerted to the incident in the early hours of Tuesday, 21st July 2026.

“On 21st July 2026, at about 12:20am, the Asokore Mampong Night Patrol Team, while on routine patrol at Asabi, received information that a male adult had been robbed of his mobile phone and was lying unconscious near the Presbyterian Church, Asabi,” the statement disclosed.

The patrol team moved swiftly to the location, spotting the suspect near the scene.

Upon noticing the approaching police officers, Mustapha attempted to evade arrest by fleeing into a nearby uncompleted building, where he was subsequently pursued and taken into custody.

A search conducted on the suspect led to the recovery of the victim’s stolen mobile phone alongside a machete. Both items have since been retained by the police as exhibits to assist in the prosecution.

The victim, who sustained severe machete wounds to his forehead, neck, and left hand during the attack, was rushed to the KNUST Hospital for urgent medical attention.

Officers visiting the hospital later that morning confirmed that the victim had regained consciousness and was in a stable condition while continuing to receive treatment under observation.

The suspect remains in police custody as investigations into the incident continue.
