Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has claimed that the Government’s Big Push Infrastructure Programme is driving the largest coordinated investment in strategic transport infrastructure in recent years, with projects underway in all sixteen regions of the country.

Presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review in Parliament last week Thursday, the Finance Minister disclosed that work has actively commenced on 87 critical infrastructure projects.

These projects comprise 74 trunk roads and bridges, 10 urban roads, and three feeder roads scattered across the nation.

Providing a scorecard on the level of progress recorded so far under the initiative, Dr Ato Forson revealed that several projects are nearing completion, while many others are steadily advancing.

“By the end of June 2026, 13 projects had reached at least 50 percent completion, including six projects that had exceeded 75 percent, while a further 15 projects had progressed beyond 25 percent completion,” he told Parliament.

Addressing the government’s major priority projects, the Minister singled out the dualisation of the Accra–Kumasi Expressway as the crown jewel of the initiative.

“Mr. Speaker, the Accra-Kumasi Expressway remains the flagship project under the Big Push Programme,” Dr Ato Forson stated. “It involves the construction of a 176-kilometre, six-lane, bidirectional expressway linking Ghana’s two largest commercial cities. When completed, the expressway will reduce travel time between Accra and Kumasi to about two hours.”

He informed lawmakers that the Ghana Armed Forces had already cleared 122 kilometres—about 70 percent of the 120-metre-wide Right-of-Way—in just 12 weeks, with total corridor clearance expected by early September.

Additionally, US$1.7 billion has already been ring-fenced and deposited into a dedicated account at the Bank of Ghana for the construction contract.

Turning his attention to the Afram Plains, Dr Ato Forson announced the construction of the 3.6-kilometre Adawso–Ekye Amanfrom Bridge, which will become the longest bridge in Ghana.

“For centuries, the people of the Afram Plains have relied on ferries to cross the Afram River,” he remarked. “The Adawso–Ekye Amanfrom Bridge… will replace the ferries, providing a safe, reliable, and all-weather crossing.”

Agricultural Roads and Job Creation

The Minister also outlined details of the Agricultural Enclave Roads Programme, a US$523 million investment aimed at rehabilitating 1,050 kilometres of feeder roads across four main production corridors.

He noted that the initiative will span 13 regions in its first phase and significantly boost local economies.

“Mr. Speaker, upon completion, the Project is expected to… create approximately 25,000 direct and indirect jobs, including at least 7,500 jobs for women,” Dr Ato Forson stressed.

He concluded by reassuring Parliament that the Ministry will fast-track projects nearing completion in the second half of the year to eliminate bottlenecks and guarantee timely delivery.
