Firefighters contain refuse blaze near Taifa Junction fuel station

July 28, 2026

Personnel from the Amasaman Fire Station of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have contained and extinguished a refuse fire near the GOIL Fuel Station at Taifa Junction in Accra.

The prompt intervention prevented what could have turned into a major disaster, given the proximity of the blaze to the service station.

According to a statement issued by the Greater Accra Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, the distress call was logged through the Fire Master Control at 23:43 GMT on Saturday, 25 July 2026.

A response crew was dispatched a minute later and arrived at the scene at 00:27 GMT on Sunday to find the fire raging.

The operational team brought the inferno under control at 00:40 GMT before completely dousing the flames by 00:47 GMT.

Preliminary investigations established that the outbreak was caused by the indiscriminate burning of refuse left unattended, which subsequently spread to surrounding vegetation on an open lot.

No loss of life or injuries were recorded in the incident.

Following the event, the GNFS renewed its warning to members of the public against the hazardous practice of leaving fires unattended.

The service urged residents across the capital to adopt safer waste disposal practices and to report fire emergencies promptly to enable quick operational responses.
