Officers from the Northern Regional Police Command have arrested two suspected drug dealers and confiscated 170 parcels of dried leaves believed to be Indian hemp during a targeted operation in Katariga, located within the Tamale Metropolis.

The arrests followed an intelligence-led operation carried out on Monday, July 27, 2026, at approximately 5:30 p.m. by the Northern Regional Special Operations Team, popularly known as “Red Maria.”

Police authorities confirmed that the raid forms part of ongoing, sustained efforts to curb illicit drug trafficking and tackle organized crime across the region.

The operation commenced with the interception of 32-year-old Godwin Yamegi, who was found in possession of two parcels of the suspected narcotic substance.

According to police sources, Yamegi provided crucial details during preliminary questioning that pointed officers directly to his supplier.

“During interrogation, he disclosed that the suspected narcotic substance had been supplied to him by Seth Amekuse, aged 33,” the statement disclosed.

Acting promptly on the disclosure, the Special Operations Team moved to Amekuse’s residence in Katariga. A thorough search of his room led to the discovery and seizure of an additional 168 parcels of suspected Indian hemp, bringing the total tally of recovered exhibits to 170.

“In all, Police recovered one hundred and seventy parcels of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp. The exhibits have been handed over to the Regional Drugs Law Enforcement Unit for further investigation and processing,” the police confirmed.

Both Yamegi and Amekuse remain in police custody to assist with ongoing investigations. Police confirmed that both men will be formally arraigned before the court to face prosecution as soon as investigations are finalized.

Commending local residents for their support, the Northern Regional Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order, while urging members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station.

“The Command remains resolute in its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all residents by relentlessly pursuing individuals engaged in the trafficking and distribution of illicit drugs,” the statement added.
