Atta Mills changed my leadership approach’ – Weija-Gbawe MP Jerry Ahmed Shaib

July 31, 2026

The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe and Second Deputy Minority Whip, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has revealed how the late former President, Professor John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills, fundamentally reshaped his personal relationship with people and his approach to leadership.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament to mark 14 years since the passing of the late President on July 24, 2012, the Weija-Gbawe lawmaker described Prof. Mills as an enduring model of humility, truthfulness, and forgiveness.

“I got fully converted after Professor Mills’ demise on issues of how to relate to people, and how to be submissive and show humility,” Shaib told Parliament.

The MP emphasised that the former President demonstrated to Ghanaians that effective leadership must remain firmly rooted in truth and consistency.
“He is the man who spoke the truth and ensured that he stood by whatever he said,” he stated.

Reflecting on the political atmosphere in the country, Shaib noted that the life and legacy of Prof. Mills serve as a clear reminder that bitterness has no place in public service.

“Professor Mills showed us a lot that there’s no reason for anybody to be vindictive,” he remarked. “Even in disagreement, he was measured. Even in power, he was humble. That is the kind of leadership we must emulate in Parliament and in our constituencies.”
Recounting his previous tenure as the Chief Executive Officer of the Coastal Development Authority, the MP highlighted the deliberate steps taken under his watch to safeguard the memory of the late leader.

“Through President Nana Akufo-Addo, we refurbished and rehabilitated Asomdwee Park, which had been deserted for several reasons. It was important that the resting place of a President who stood for peace was given the dignity it deserves,” Shaib recalled.

Concluding his statement, the Second Deputy Minority Whip called on current political leaders across the spectrum to honour the late President by actively demonstrating the principles he championed throughout his lifetime.

“If we truly want to honor him, then we must practice what he lived: humility, submission to the will of the people, and respect in how we treat one another,” he added.

Professor John Evans Atta Mills served as President of the Republic of Ghana from January 2009 until his sudden passing in July 2012, leaving behind a legacy anchored on his ‘Better Ghana Agenda’ and an unwavering commitment to peace and national unity.
