The President, John Dramani Mahama, has announced ambitious plans to expand the processing capacity of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) to 100,000 barrels of crude oil per day, hailing the facility’s revival as a monumental achievement delivered without financial backing from the central government.

Speaking at the official commissioning of a state-of-the-art distillation unit at the refinery, President Mahama celebrated the simultaneous arrival of the first consignment of crude oil sourced directly from Ghana’s offshore Jubilee Fields.

He emphasized that the dual milestones signal the dawn of a transformative era for the national petroleum industry while substantially fortifying the country’s energy security strategy.

The newly commissioned unit marks a crucial stride in fully restoring the facility to its optimum operational strength.

By incorporating indigenous crude from the Jubilee Fields, the refinery has secured a stable and steady supply of local feedstock, significantly bolstering downstream operations.

According to President Mahama, getting TOR back up and running honors a central pledge made by his administration.

Beyond fulfilling a key political promise, he described the revival as a strategic economic intervention designed to spur job creation, fortify national fiscal stability, and drastically trim Ghana’s reliance on expensive foreign petroleum imports.

Backing the government’s vision, the Managing Director of the Tema Oil Refinery, Edmund Kombat, confirmed that the upgraded distillation facility will immediately enhance operational efficiency.

He noted that the boosted infrastructure equips TOR to process higher volumes of crude oil, ensuring the plant is better positioned to satisfy increasing domestic fuel demands.

Adding to the optimistic outlook, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, underscored the broader strategic importance of the rehabilitation effort.

He pointed out that restoring TOR to peak performance remains a vital cornerstone in Ghana’s quest to solidify its stance as the primary petroleum hub within the West African sub-region.
