The Coalition of Unemployed Graduates with Disabilities has called on the President to immediately relieve the Minister for Education and the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) of their posts, accusing them of undermining presidential directives and denying qualified disabled citizens public sector jobs.
The demand comes as the coalition issued a strict one-week ultimatum to government to recruit qualified persons with disabilities who took part in the recent GES recruitment drive.
Failure to address their grievances, the group warned, will prompt an indefinite peaceful occupation of the Jubilee House, the Ministry of Finance, and the GES headquarters.
The coalition expressed strong disappointment in both institutions, alleging that they have completely ignored government’s commitment to reserve at least five per cent of public sector job opportunities for persons with disabilities.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem, on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Gilbert Boateng Agyare, convener of the group, said their number is more than 300, but about 200 of them are well educated and seeking employment in government institutions.
He called on the President to remove the Minister for Education and the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, accusing them of failing to implement the presidential directive.
He further argued that the failure to recruit persons with disabilities violates both Ghana’s Persons with Disability Act, 2006 (Act 715), and the country’s obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Sustainable Development Goals.
