An elderly man believed to be in his seventies has perished in a devastating inferno at Aputuogya, situated within the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region.
Family members identified the victim as Agya Poku, who was trapped in the five-room residential property when the blaze erupted, rendering him unable to scramble to safety.
The Bosomtwe District Fire Service confirmed they were dispatched following a distress alert routed through their headquarters regarding a house on fire behind a local clinic in Aputuogya.
Speaking exclusively to Nyankonton Mu Nsem during the firefighting operation, the Bosomtwe District Fire Commander, ADO1 Addo-Korang, verified that the impacted structure housed five rooms.
He recounted that officers braved the intense heat and navigated the engulfed building, only to discover the pensioner trapped inside one of the chambers.
Grief-stricken relatives and tenants of the property watched on in total despair as they described the terrifying speed with which the flames consumed the building.
The tragedy was further compounded by reports from some occupants who revealed that while good Samaritans rushed to help them salvage personal belongings, opportunistic thieves exploited the chaotic scene to steal cash and other valuable items.
The remains of the deceased have since been conveyed to the mortuary for preservation, whilst fire authorities and law enforcement have initiated full investigations to ascertain the origin of the blaze and track down the alleged thieves.
